Joseph Warren Hartwell (1809-49)
Joseph Hartwell was my paternal 3rd great-grandfather, a seaman and ship's captain who resided in Salem, Massachusetts. After 25+ successful sea voyages to ports around the world, he met his untimely end at the age of 40 in the California Gold Rush, leaving his four sons, all under the age of 10, to be raised by his wife Lydia.
