The Hartwell Homestead in Salem
Joseph bought a house in Salem on June 17, 1842 for $1,000. At the time, he had been married to Lydia about four years, and their son Joseph was about three years old.

Know all Men by these Presents, That
George Turner of Salem, in the County of Essex, Carpenter
in consideration of one thousand dollars to me paid by
Joseph Hartwell of the same Salem, Mariner
the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, do hereby give, grant, sell and convey unto
the said Hartwell all that lot of land situate in that part of said Salem,
called South Fields, which I bought of Shillaber Haley by deed recorded in Book
301 Leaf 66 and by ? dead is bounded beginning at the Northmost corner thereof
on a way laid out 2o2 feet wide leading northerly to Harbour Street, then as running
easterly about forty eight feet six inches and northerly by land of said Haley, thence
Southerly about thirty one feet and bounded Easterly by a passage way four feet
wide leading Southerly to a well by land of Miller, thence Northerly thirty three feet four inches
to the first mentioned bounds and bounded Westerly by the 202 feet way leading
to Harbour Street, likewise a privilege in the said four feet way on land of s. Burley
leading Southerly to a well, and a privilege of getter water from said well, to-
gether with the house and all buildings which I have since exi
ted and now Handing thereon, and also half of the well now
belonging to myself and James Smith.

To Have and to Hold the afore-granted premises to the said Hartwell
his heirs and assigns, to his and their use and behoof forever.
And I do covenant with the said Hartwell,
his heirs and assigns, that I am lawfully seized in fee of the afore-granted premises,
that they are free of all incumbrances;
that I have good right to sell and convey the same to the said Hartwell in the
manner aforesaid
And that I will warrant and defend the same premises to the said Hartwell,
his heirs and assigns, forever, against the lawful claims and demands of all persons.
In Witness Whereof, I the said George Turner
with Augusta my wife, who hereby releases all right of dower in
the premises
have hereunto set over lands and seals this seventeenth day of June in the year of our Lord
