 November 1 Gen. Franklin moved from Barre’s Landing to Carrion Crow Bayou with all his troops. The Roads are very muddy & we have had a severe time of it. One Div of 13th Army Stayed in C. Crow. November 2 We left Carrion Crow at 6 this morning & arrived at Vermilion at 3 pm. The Cavalry Drove in about 500 head of cattle. November 3 Vermilion at 3pm. General Franklin was informed that the Rebs had engaged our men at Carrion Crow, [and] the fight was yet a going on.  November 4 At one o'clock this morn Gen. Washburn Sent for Reinforcements. The 1st & 3rd Brigades Started at 8 and [arrived] to the Battlefield about Sunrise. But the Show was over & we lost 500 men. November 5 This morning our whole force left Carrion Crow & moved back to Vermilion. But had to leave some of our wounded in Carrion Crow in the hospital. November 6 We formed line at 1 o'clock this morning & laid on arms until Daylight when the Rebs Showed themselves Near our lines. Skirmished all day. November 7 There was some light skirmishing on our front this morning but it did not last long before our Cavalry Drove the Rebs Back to Carrion Cove Bayou. November 8 Everything is great on our lines today. We had Sunday morning inspection & at 4pm our Regt. went on picket. Received one letter from David McElroy [Charles' father]. November 9 The Rebs are in Sight of our lines again. It is very evident that they have a large force.  November 10 Last Night we [were] visited with a heavy frost for the first [time] this season. November 11 Cavalry engaged the Rebs at Carrion Crow this morning & fell back to Vermilion. They followed them near the town. We lost a number of horses & had some 25 men wounded. November 12 We [were] all out in line at 4 this morning [and] lied on our arms until Daylight. 161st Regt went on picket at 4pm. November 13 Our prisoners are Busy Digging Rifle pits. It is Believed that we will have a hard Battle at this place before we leave here. November 14 We were called out at an early hour again this morning to Be Ready in case of an attack By the enemy. November 15 We had company inspection at 8 o'clock, preaching at 10 & at 6 pm had orders to march in the morning.  November 16 We Broke Camp at Vermillion at 6am & moved back to Lake Tasse & stayed over night Lake Tasse or Camp Pratt. November 17 We moved again this morn & arrived at New Iberia at 2pm. B & H [were] Detached to guard quartermaster stores in town. I went to the Regimental Hospital. November 19 Our mail arrived today. Everything appears to be unpleasant in this place. November 20 Our men captured 104 Rebels at Tasse Lake. 161st Regt went out after forage today [and] fetched in [a] fine lot of poultry & potatoes. November 21 The Commanding Officers [had] a Hearse [or horse?] Race today.  November 22 I am at the Hospital & feel very Bad today. Every thing is quiet inside & around our lines. November 23 Our cavalry has captured 70 more Rebs today & this is a very Rainy Day. November 24 Today I left the Hospital & Reported to the Company at New Iberia. November 25 I have washed Near all of my clothes. I commenced at 5 this morning & got through about 10 The cavalry captured 100 more Rebels today November 26 This appears to be a very Dull Thanksgiving as everything is quiet in town. November 27 The Western army went after forage this morning. At night they Return[ed] loaded with corn sugar & poultry.  November 28
The 1st LA [Light Artillery] cavalry had a skirmish with some Rebs. We lost one man & had one wounded through the leg. November 29 The Weather is cool & Disagreeable. November 30 Our cavalry went to Vermi [Vermilion]. But owing to the amount of artillery the Rebs used they [were] obliged to fall back.
